After eight  years of planning, a $10 million pedestrian and bicycle bridge connecting lower Queen Anne and Belltown with the waterfront is finally ready to begin construction next month.

The West Thomas Street Overpass, spanning Elliott Avenue West and the railroad tracks from Thomas Street to Myrtle Edwards Park, was delayed by public debate, environmental reviews, permitting and a lack of funds.

Since missing its original 2005 construction date, the project has received funding through two Seattle Parks and Recreation grants, a Puget Sound regional grant, a King County grant and private donations and is scheduled for completion next spring.

The West Thomas Street Overpass is part of another long-planned project, the Lake to Bay Loop, which will run between South Lake Union to the waterfront. For more information on the future pedestrian and bicycle loop, including its proposed route, click here.
