KOMO tower gets a makeover | Community Spirit
Title (Max 100 Charaters)
If you looked up at the television towers at the top of the hill today you probably saw more activity than normal.
Crews hoisted a large crane to the top of the tower operated by KOMO-TV (the center one), to begin work on a new antenna that will be mounted atop the structure.
"(The) ultimate goal is to optimize our transmitted digital signal for over-the-air reception," KOMO Chief Engineer John Barrett said.
First constructed in 1952, and nestled between KING and KIRO towers, KOMO's antenna will be the tallest of the three after construction is completed in early June.
But the added height isn't just for show. Replacement of the old analog antenna with a new digital broadcast design will allow a stronger signal to be sent out to viewers in all directions, and improve coverage for those who live west and northwest of Seattle.
Aside from the growth spurt, the tower will also be getting eco-friendly LED lights, as well as a fresh coat of paint.
Expect to see crews climbing the tower for the next several weeks as work continues.
