Disappearing dad gets a new name

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Monday, November 30th, 05:01pm

Remember Nicholas Francisco, the man whose mug was posted all over QA by his freaked-out family after he disappeared, and then he turns up, all fine, in California living under another name?

He's now showing his face on Facebook, under a new name, prompting some interesting comments on his wall.

Maybe they should have a separate Facebook for the two-faced among us... Facebook 2.0?

I spy with my traffic eye...

Submitted by Amy Roe on Wednesday, November 25th, 11:17am

Relax. The closed circuit cameras SDOT will be installing at the intersections of Queen Anne Ave N. and N. Mercer St and 1st Ave and Denny Way are not the kind that take pictures when you run red lights.

Workers in the city’s Traffic Management Center will use the cameras to monitor traffic and adjust the timing of traffic signals in order to keep freight and passenger vehicles moving smoothly. SDOT is adding 57 such cameras throughout the city to their existing stable.

SDOT is also adding 11 electronic message signs and its Traveler’s Information Map will soon be available on handheld devices.

The equipment will be tested first and should be up and running in early 2010.

Belle of the St. Lucia Ball

Submitted by Amy Roe on Tuesday, November 24th, 04:23pm

On Dec. 13, St. Lucia's Day, Scandinavians-- and Italians-- choose a girl to be "Lucia," by dressing in white and wearing a crown of candles on her head.

Lucia, or Lucy, brings light to what is, in Scandinavia, at least, the darkest day of the year.

This year, make a date with Lucy: The Swedish Cultural Center will hold a St. Lucia Ball at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11. It kicks off with a glögg and social hour, followed by a St. Lucia pageant, dinner and dancing.

It's $45 for nonmembers-- candle crown not included. And did you know you don't have to be Swedish to join the center?

Man robbed, beaten near Aurora & McGraw

Submitted by Ray Marcham on Sunday, November 22nd, 10:41am

A man was injured early Sunday morning when he was beaten and robbed at a motel near Aurora and McGraw.

Police were called to the scene just before 2 a.m.  The person who called led police to the victim, was in a room with the caller and a woman.

The victim had stepped outside to have a cigarette when he was confronted by two men, one with a gun.  The armed man struck the victim several times with the gun.

The robbers then took from the victim a licensed gun, his wallet, keys, a cell phone and magazines.  Once the victim got back into the caller's room, the robbers tried to force their way in, but were not successful.  They were gone by time police arrived.

Rally to save King County 4-H Sunday at KeyArena

Submitted by Ray Marcham on Saturday, November 21st, 04:10pm

Around 500 people are expected on the west side of KeyArena on Sunday afternoon to show their support for 4-H clubs in King County.

Club members say that pending cuts from the county would mean the end to the popular groups in King County.  It is part of a budget proposal that would end all county contributions to Washington State University's King County Extension office, which helps oversee 4-H in the county.

A number of those at the rally will also bring their animals, to show off what 4-H does.

The rally on the 1st Avenue side of KeyArena begins at 1 p.m.

Saturday is cleanup day on QA!

Submitted by Ray Marcham on Friday, November 20th, 03:50pm

Once again, it's time to roll up the sleeves (unless you're cold) and spruce up the neighborhood, as it's time for Queen Anne Cleanup Day!

You don't even have to bring anything.  Show up at the Neighborhood Center at 160 Roy Street on Saturday morning at 9 a.m., and everything will be provided, including gloves, tools and garbage bags.  You'll even get breakfast and coffee, too!

The event has been a tradition for over 20 years, and the concentration of the cleanup this year is along Queen Anne Avenue and Roy Street.

Information is on the Greater Queen Anne Chamber of Commerce's website, but they'll be more than happy if you just show up and be ready to help.
